Best hand mill for CNC conversion

on 2003-08-24 19:50:13 UTC
I just finished scanning the archives and read with interest a recent
thread on this very subject. I have been doing a fair amount of
research over the past couple of weeks as I prepare to buy a mill.
Whichever I finally buy, I plan to convert it to CNC operation soon
after. Thus it behooves me to buy one that will best handle the
conversion. This will be my first machine purchase, although I am not
new to machining. I took a year-long class in hand and CNC machining
a few years back.

I have placed an arbitrary cap of $2000 on the initial outlay, which
must include the mill, shipping and tax (if applicable), but not
accessories. I have narrowed my choices down to two designs: knee and
geared head with dovetail column. Each design appears to have its
advantages and drawbacks.

From a conversion standpoint, I would like to read from anyone who has
experience with either or both, and what sort of performance they have
been able to obtain. Your input will really help me in finalizing my
decision, which I need to do this week.

Best,

Michael
