Re: Controllers and drivers for stepper motors

Neil;

There's one quick answer to your questions - It depends.

Whether you need 3 or four axes depends on what you wnat to engrave:
flat plates - 3 axes,
+ around circumference (such as a ring) - 4 axes

The necessary items needed to to set this up depends on what you have
and how attached you are to them. Basicly you need:

- an interface between the parallel port and the drivers
- drivers (number as above) (may need extra parts - resistors)
- stepper motors (as determined above)

several of the multi-axis drivers have an integrated parallel port
interface. Separate cost of the interface ranges from $30 up.
Integrated interface / driver boards for three axes start at about
$125 and go up. Six lead steppers were an astute purchase as you can
run them as either bipolar or unipolar motors. Which way you go will
depend on the type of drivers that you have.

I'm sorry to send back more questions, but without knowing the
details I can't give you any advice.
