It just so happens I am doing the same very thing this week...what I chose
to do is obtain some wool/polyester felt and have my wife sew 3" square
patches together in groups of 6 or 7, making a fairly thick swatch about
3/16" thick, then punch a hole just large enough so the ballscrew can be
forced and threaded into the hole. Will make a retainer from a large steel
washer and some small angle material to permit screw fastening the felt
circle to the back side of the round ball nut. The wool will be cut to size
and oiled and should act to keep the chaff out of the works.
I don't know how you would machine a nylon part sufficiently precise enough
to clean the screw. Too much difficulty for my blood.

sister site to the CCED group, as many of the same members are there, for OT
subjects, that are not allowed on the CCED list.
