Bob, you're on the money: definiately want to use a cap after the
rectifier. The cap serves to smooth the DC ripple; in other words, if
you hook the outputs of the bridge to a scope, you'd see a HUGE
deviation in output voltage represented as spikes on the display.
Never be able to see this on a multimeter, as they just average the
voltage. The cap smoothes this voltage to an acceptable "flat" dc
wave form - in other words, run the Geckos with out a cap, and you'll
let the smoke out of them.
