Hey Tim
You are quite correct.
I plead guilty to trying to design the bestest, most accurate,
cheapest, biggest machines around.
A good case in point is my using a machine mapped out to
+/- 0.0005" (25 degrees c) to cut wood.
But it did come in handy to make precision parts for
encoder prototypes....
As for GT vs XL and L my opinion comes from some meetings and
tests with Gates application engineers. I was pretty convinced from
those that GT is a bit better for not much more in price.
Suprisingly I found that the newer GTII was not as good!
All will work and are used in cnc apps of course.

dad can whoop your dad ego building manner that us men approach things,
that the HD and GT series belts do have better specs in regards to
registration accuracy, there have been a lot of machines built over the
years and still running that use the XL and L series belts. While the
tendency is to want to over build and over spec everything on a machine
the results will not be based on the best component you put in the
system, but the worst. With all the possible places to have losses of
accuracy the difference between the older trapezoidal shape belts and
the newer rounded tooth belts are probably not the major factor in most
of our machines.
