1: take Jon's (unerringly) sage advice
2: go to any stepper/servo motor manufacturers site, download all of
their application notes. There is a goldmine of information in them that
speak directly to the questions you are asking.... massage a large
amount of the info into your brain, rinse and repeat. ;-}
Parker Motion and Control has some good info.
New Japan Radio Corp has good stuff too..
3: Buy an older physics textbook at the local used book store or school.
there are thousands/millions of them out of work right now.
