I have a CNC'd minimill with direct drive to the stock leadscrews
w/ball thrust bearings on all axis, and 424oz/in size 34 steppers.
I'm not getting close to the rapids speed you mentioned, so I
wondered what voltage the Geckos are running at and what you used for
leadscrews? I've got a 3.5 amp 24 volt microstepping driver, and the
steppers are peaking out at 35 ipm.
