I have never seen 6 conductor Cat 5 wire. It is normally 8 conductor. Also,
if the individual wires are 18 ga that is sure not computer wire. The patch
cord I am looking at is 24 AWG.

Never tried it, but the idea of twisted pair is that is is pretty resistant
to EMI and tends to not radiate EMI.
