the Camtronics than you do not need any power (+5V) to the breakout
board. Other brands may use active components that require the power.
Easiest way to check if you are getting a signal is to connect a VOM or
DVM set to read DC voltage from the common to the direction pin and then
jog first one way and then the other. When you change direction the
reading should swing from near 0 to near +5v. It is much harder to get a
read on the step signal unless you have a logic probe or a oscilloscope.
