In the past couple years on the list, I seem to remember those that
go for a sliding table have often been for reasons like a small table
such as a PCB size. or for a larger like a plasma cutter, but that
the table would also feed a sheet.
When I was looking at designing a table someone mentioned that they
made a 4 foot table and would just index the part so as to use an 8
foot sheet, 1/2 at a time.
I nixed the idea when it became obvious that you need linear rails
twice as long, and they are hard to come by and expensive.
