Shawn, I am in the very same predicament. I use Acad 2002 at work, and the
CAM apps all seem to puke on its dxf output. Have decided to try some
other CAD software for designing complex jobs, but it has been recommended
that I try some NC converter appps such as AutoEditCNC and others
similar....to learn basic G&M codes and canned cycles first before trying to
output more complex code automatically from a complex CAM app. Theory bding
that if you don't know exactly what each g or m code is for, it will be
impossible to follow a cam app's spaghetti output. A more simple approach
I believe is to draw your part for 2-1/2 dimension cutting, and add on
different layers, the appropriate offsets (1/2 cutter width) around the
outline of the part's original design in Acad, then import those "toolpath"
layers for the g-code conversion. You then presumably do repeats of the
same toolpaths at different z levels to machine the third depth. Just seems
very archaic to me, to do things that way, but I guess it's a starting point
and is likely the quickest for simple parts. Email me direct if you want,
to further discuss. Surely others also with more experience will want to add
for clarity.
