McMaster Carr has them for a decent price, the belts anyway. I find the
pulleys expensive though. We direct drive every axis we can, and that
is all of them except those where space is a limitation. Given the
choice between belt drive/"gear" reduction or direct drive/more
expensive motor, I'd pick the later every time.
If you are belt driving so that you can put handwheels on it, remember
that most software doesn't accept the input from the encoder directly,
thus you don't have a DRO when you are in handwheel mode. Furthermore,
electronic handwheels are far nicer than manual handwheels.
