Step Driver Card/Box DB Sex?

Hi all,
what is the defacto standard or popular home CNC type drive card side
step/dir input connector 25 pin DB sex?
This concerns the also seemingly popular arrangement of pins 2-7 as X-Y-Z
PC Par Port.
I'm building a new box and am muddling.
Is there a reason for one sex over the other?
