Single axis CNC question

I am new to this group. I am interest to build a large scale single
axis cnc machine (positioning). I do not need the spindle, but I need
to use G & M codes to turn other functions (i.e. power, pumps, etc...)
Any suggestions how to get the ball rolling? TIA
