I'd opt for a hollow shaft encoder. Something like a 5/8" bore. Then,
all
you need to do is turn a split bushing to adapt to whatever shaft size you
may need. Only snag is, the hollow shaft units are much more expensive.
And
larger.
As far as regular shafted encoders, <A

ationdirect.com</A> had some industrial units for under a $100.
