I thought it would be a good idea to post how much a PIC based DRO would cost if you built it yourself. These prices are in USD as most on this list are of that flavour.


The "Shooting Star" is PIC based (actually, "Basic Stamp"). Cost is
$500 for two axes (including the scales), $700 for 3 axis. Not sure
how many cpu's are in the box. I am pretty sure they did the two axis
unit with a single cpu -- two readers, two displays, a numeric keypad,
to allow direct entry of presets, inch/mm etc. (sharing the keyboard
might mean n+1 processors if they did one cpu/axis)

If people are talking about scales, I would love some at 250 or 500
lines/mm. Not all of us count "thou", I ususally work to 0.01mm, which
means I could really use 0.005mm display, and would love 0.001mm counts.
