I've thought about this too.
Is it the guys who cut vinyl who use a knife that is spring loaded ?
it would seem that a polishing bit could be as simple as a tube with a
keyway and an internal bar. the bar would also be keyed, and spring
loaded so that it had some range of movement seperate from the spindle.
The spring tension could be changed for the metal being finsihed.
possibly do this in a bath of paste/grit, or apply it as you go ?
One note about watches, is that I would remove the plate from the watch
as if one piece of grit gets into the watch, it becomes trash.
