Granite would be an excellent choice - it is ultra stable and strong.
I have an 24" x 24" XYZ table made from granite - some sections are
10" thick/ I intend to convert this to a precision engraver / mill later next year.
The granite forms the overall structure, with a fixed Z axis - no granite actully
moves around. The whole assembly stand about 5 ft high.

Sections on this are joined together either by through hole drilling
(I suppose with some sort of masonry or diamond tipped drill bit)
and are bolted together. Other sections - the real thick ones are drilled
and a metal threaded insert has been resin fixed in. The only down
side to a granite system would or is in my case the weight - you would
not rush into moving the unit around - I I think my unit probably weighs
half a Ton !!!
