Commercial vs. hobby

> .... Define Commercial.

As a moderator, I see it as people posting just their site and no
question or response to this list, just their url or product.
Happens a couple times a week. If it is a newbie, I explain, then
warn, then ban. This list is not a spam box.

Also someone who has altered software and wants to know about
licensing or use. What benefit is that to the home user as regards
building ? (answer off list if you want to reply)

Using products and mentioning their names is not commercial, even if
you are the dealer.

Offering solutions to others problems by the use of your products is
not commercial, IF you explain the engineering/software solution.
Including engineering goes a long way for the whole group. Posting a
URL as the sole response does not.

Answering questions as to the use of your product will most likely be
on topic as Marriss and Fred and others keep replies general to all
who may have a similar problem.

Trying to figure out how to market your version of hardware/software
is way over the line. Chances are A single post, and A single reply
will go unnoticed. A thread will get stopped cold.

Re-read the list rules in the files section and see how the spirit of
the rules go. This list is primarily for the guy making his home
shop machine. From a guy who has a foundry and soldering iron and
makes every part to a guy who wants to buy a Bridgeport and assemble
it with all commercial devices.

This list is not and never will be a platform to discuss the
marketing or development of commercial products. Asking what is
needed and wanted in your stuff is probably not. Post 68418 is over
the line if you want an example.

Bill stepped in before I did to say that the user side of the thread
is fine, but get it on topic.

I probably would have killed the thread outright when it went that
far off the rails. I think Bill saw that there was interest and
asked to bring it back.

The bottom line is that when Bill or Tim or any of the moderators ask
to bring it back on topic, it has already strayed, but the request to
bring it back means we accept that there is some group interest that
is on topic. If we can't see that, the thread is dead.

The bottom line is that if you don't like the call, read the list
rules, and see if the thread is in the spirit of the list. Then e-
mail Bill or the list moderators for an explanation. (E-mail address
at the bottom of this)

I posted this to the list as questions of why we decide the topic has
strayed comes up occasionally. And many don't get that the spirit of
the list is for building a home unit is our guiding principle.

I am going to post a copy of this in the list rules folder in the
files section for future reference.

This post is NOT open for list discussion. Period.

If you want to discuss, e-mail me off list or better yet, e-mail all
