I have used many phase converters in my own shop. Most I have put together
myself. The stabilizer is not nesscecarry. The main thing to be aware of is
the wild leg that is produced when using phase converters. Look at your
machine and make sure the wild leg is not tied to the 220 to 120 volt
reduction transformer input. Your 120 volt is what powers the voltage
sensitive computer equipment in the CNC. So if the wild leg is producing 260
volt this will also raise the output of the 120 to 160 volt which is not
acceptable. Another matter to be concerned about is your own house single
phase ouput if your ouput power is 250 volt the phase converter will produce
250 volt three phase output and much higher on the wild leg.
Most CNC equipment call for 230 volt. If this is the case in your situation
a voltage reducing transformer rated for the correct Kva may be necessary to
drop your input power.
PS: To further protect the 120 volt equipment from surging. I like to use a
line conditioner such as the ones available from Tripp-Lite. Not a bad idea
for further protection. Very cheap insurance.
