True closed-loop servo systems have position info available at the computer.
The Geckodrive systems don't generally work that way.

No, normally you don't want a lot of following error. Except in some
systems
with very high resolution encoders, the 128 count error limit is already a
bit large. For instance, in a system with encoder resolution equal to
.001",
an error of 128 counts is over 1/8"!
