I used Renishaw probes (TP2) on five Walter NC grinders that I
retotfitted with Analam 4 Axis controls. Renishaw makes an interface
board that allows the probe hit to output a signal that can be used
as a direct input. I was only probing the rotary axis so I just used
the signal output to home the axis. The repeatablity of the probing
was pretty good, within 0.001". The probes are a little expensive,
around $2500 but they worked really well. There are a couple of
things to watch out for. One you have to make sure you "arm"
and "disarm" the probe to prevent hits when in the machine cycle.
The probes are pretty sensitive so any vibration will trigger them.
The TP2 is a fixed mount probe so you have to be able to mount it
with the wiring. I mounted mine off the side of the spindle and used
the three linear axis to position the probe. In this case you have
to make sure you have room. All in all the system worked very good.
Good Luck.
