Terry,
It all depends how many axis you want to use for your foam cutter. Two axis
will allow straight sided cut while four allows taper cuts.
I use 4 axis with a specialized controller but it is very easy to set up
standard stepper drivers to run the foam cutter, my first cutter used this.
You'll need a breakout board to hook up the steppers to the parallel port.
Power supplies etc can be used for both applications. If you want you can
use software like Mach2 to run the steppers. A variac with a transformer
gives you a good safe wire heat supply. You can also goto a power supply
like this
