A stepper motor which has a permanent magnet in the rotor and depends solely
on the interaction between the flux field of the magnet and the coils is a
PM stepper motor. This is pretty similar to a DC brushless motor, but it is
run much differently.

A stepper motor which has only iron in the core and snaps to position by the
fact that the rotor will prefer to be in a position where the reluctance is
minimum is a variable reluctance or VR stepper motor. The minimum
reluctance position is where the air gap is minimum.

A stepper motor which used both principles of operation for maximum effect
is a hybrid stepper motor.

Every motor ever discussed in this group and related groups is a hybrid
motor. The other types are only common in some very specific applications.
