I use the VIA Mini-ITX boards.
http://www.viatech.com/en/VInternet/mini_itx.jsp
They are extremely small which allows me to easily put it in a small case
with my stepper controllers. They have 1-serial, 1-parallel, and 2 USB
ports.

build these machines for industrial control, so I need serial and
parallel ports.
I just built several machines at work, and considered Abit, Intel,
Gigabyte, and several other brands. All had PPorts.
I settled on the Intel 865 PERL motherboards, which cost about $140.- (one
of the higher priced ones)
Other boards started below $80.-
