I have found the Oldham type of coupling to be generally cheaper and just
as effective as other forms of in-line coupling. Timing belt pulleys are
cost-effective too where it is desirable for the motor not to be in line
with the shaft, or where a reduction drive is needed.

Making your own Oldham couplings would be perfectly feasible, but not clear
that they are expensive enough to warrant the effort.
