Open your caliper a half inch or so and turn it over so you're
looking at the back side. Now move the jaw fore and aft, noticing
the change in distance from the end of the body to the step formed
by the thickness of the moving jaw. When the jaw is closed, this
step comes flush with the end of the caliper body. For reading a
step length, place the step on the slide against one surface and
move the body till it touches the other surface. I find this to be
a far more accurate and consistent reading than the one you'll get
when attempting to use the back end of the caliper as a depth gage,
unless you take the time to install the depth attachment to
stabilize the caliper.
