Jon,
Thanks for the help. Actually it has a round column, not a dove tail.
To make matters worse, when the lock is released to raise or lower the
head, there is nothing to keep it from rotating around the column. I
don't think this is a candidate for moving the entire head unless I do
a great deal of mechanical modifications.
