You would do much better to move the whole head, and leave the quill locked
for CNC operation. The particular design of this machine (I think we
are talking
about the 850 Lb machine with either dovetail or rectangular column and the
"geared head" - is that right?) makes it VERY hard to do a quill drive
properly.

I think a servo might be a better way to go with that big head, though.
