I had been looking to buy an EMCO compact 5 lathe and just like the
bus story I looked for ages then 2 came along. So I have a nice late
model with RS232, DNC and tool changer and an early model which I
intend to upgrade. I swapped the X axis stepper over from the early
lathe to the late lathe as this was duff. So now I'm left with the
early model that needs a new stepper motor. I could buy a straight
replacement from EMCO once I find how to get in touch ( anyone any
idea where to get spares for Compact 5s ?) or I could up grade the
lot because without a RS 232 link this machine is a bit useless.
Anyone any idea on a good upgrade route, I was thinking of a pair of
new steppers but in a frame 23 size as the X axis is a bit short on
space and drive the whole lot from a PC with maybe the Mach2
software mentioned in earlyer posts. Mabe I will try to fit a driven
tool on the x axis as well. I understand that stepper and drive
technolgy has moved on since these lathes were made so I could take
advantage of modern kit, any ideas?
