Howdy Peter;

If memory serves, some servos, and possibly steppers, have solenoid activated
brake mechanisms. Try running a search on solenoid brakes, and check out the
manufacturers for one that might fit your purposes. You'd be wanting one that
you could fit to your table mechanism, not the servo, or stepper, otherwise,
you'd still have backlash.
