A post processor acts like a translator from the CAM software to the
code specific for the machine that you are tayloring- there is a one
to many relationship between the CAM file and the Gcode for machines
with different controllers. For example in its simplest form a post
processor may just add an identifier at the start of the GCODE
however postprocessors can become very complicated when machines
have non standard functionality.
