You put the diode across the fuses, so that it is reverse-biased, and does
not conduct, in the normal operating condition. This is when the
motors/drives are drawing current from the power supply.
When the fuse blows, the motor/drive is able to return current back to the
power supply through the (now) forward-biased diode.
Without the diode, the open circuit between the power supply and the
drive(after the fuse blows) means that returned energy from the motor has
nowhere to go, and builds up in the drive and zaps it.
Or so I understand....
