Three reasons I can think of:
1) The averaging speed is pretty slow, and generally not adjustable
(whereas you can fine-tune the response of a custom circuit to your liking)
2) You can't read an LCD from across the room - LEDs are way better for
distance viewing.
3) A bar graph takes less brainpower to decipher - you don't have to
think about the digits, or where the decimal point is, etc. - you just
look at the width of the pretty lights.
