"W-1" simply means "Water-hardenable, grade 1. I have NO clue what "grade
2" would be, IF there is any such. The only other two like designations I
know are "O-1" for "Oil-hardenable", and "A-1" for "Air-hardenable (heat
orange-hot, then let cool in air; no quenching). ALL three are sometimes called
"Sheffield steel" (Yes, the Sheffield in England!). Surely someone there knows
the UK-speak translations for what we Yanks call 'em!
