Has been done, it works,
just set a safe voltage threshold for a step advance.
but very inefficient as the correct constant proximity affects the process
a lot
so being 'out of posn' most of the time means large loss of cutting velocity.
I think Kern MicroSystems advised this way for their stepper CNC.
