I recently finsihed a router (16"x32"). I Use common 1/4" pegboard as
the top surface. I have a fence along two edges so the work is stopped
on those edges. I use a shop vac to power it. MY base table is a 1"
thick slab of high density board, with 3/4" sq strips screwed on top to
support the pegboard but leave air channels.

It works OK. If the sheet Im cutting is large enough it holds very fine,
but a small piece- say 4"x12" slips.

Also be sure your shop vac filter is clear- they clog with fine sawdust
very fast. Im watching at the town dump for a shop vac that I can
dedicate to the hold down, just the bare motor and no filter.

Im also making some small eccentric edge clamps with a 1/4" dia peg on
ther back. These can be placed along the edges of a small sheet and
twisted tight to the edge.

I have some photos of my router on my web site- http:///plsntcov.8m.com
