Scott,
If the Z knee is acme screw driven the brake won't be required. If it's a ballscrew then it would be. I pulled all the brakes out of mine. The Z on a Gecko with that size servo will produce rapids of about 50 ipm. It's amazing how that little drive can tolerate that. When I first put my machine together I rationalized after looking at the Gecko and the 40 in-lb servo that if I could get at least a week or two of service before replacing the drive I could handle that and it wouldn't be too large of a maintenence consideration. And drilling holes would presumably be out of the question. That was almost two years ago and the same Gecko320 is still in service. Seems like I've drilled enough holes to go to China and back. Funny thing is after drilling hard for 4 hours, I stop to let the servo cool down, The drive is not warm at all.

They come
up on e-bay all the time. I just picked up a 40 in-lb Baldor, brand
new, to drive my knee and it cost me less than $300. I picked up
brand new Baldor 12.5 in-lb servos for $145 each to drive the x and
y. I just need to do a 4:1 reduction to increase the torque, but
it is OK because they are really fast motors. According to your
figures I should be able to run them direct drive. These motors are
sealed units and the cables with connector are available for them.
The encoders included are 1000 lines. The big guy has a brake which
will be great for the knee. Ron runs 40 in-lb servos all day with
Gecko drives and has no problems. Servos rule! Steppers drool!
