Stick with real servos if you can. The treadmill motors are cheap
but they are a real unknown. You don't know what the heck you are
getting. Going NEMA 42 to NEMA 34 is an easy conversion, probably
easier than trying to mount a treadmill designed for horizontal
mounting.
