If it's the gantry, mount a pillow block on each end of it along its top and run a shaft from one side to the other. Use timing belts from this shaft to each motor. If using a rack and pinion. A second pinion gear could be used on each side and drive the timing belt back to this same shaft in lieu of belting right off the motor in case youre using geared head right angle drives perhaps. At any rate slaving two motors is very do-able and safe.

I am planning a large 2.5m x 3.5m router using 2 motors on the x axis, and that post reawakened worries. The idea seems fairly common, so what safeguards can be put in place to alleviate this risk?
