Andy and Dave - Thanks very much for your responses. Now I know what
to look for this weekend when I (hopefully) set it up.

Jack - I went with this motor:
1906&catname=electric>

and this speed control:
1906&catname=electric>

I also couldn't decide between AC or DC, I went this way for a few
reasons. First is that it seems to be cheaper then going with a VFD
and 3 phase motor (barring any e-bay finds which I no longer had the
patience to wait for. I spent a long time browsing for a decent
looking motor and then a comparable VFD to run it.) Also along those
lines, if I fry the VFD somehow, I have to then search E-bay again for
one with the same rating, then wait for the bidding to end... or bite
the bullet and pay full price. Whereas if I mess up this speed
control, I give Surplus Center another $40 and wait a few days for it
to show up in UPS. Secondly, my tiny breaker box is full, and I have
only one 220 breaker left open which I need for the Bridgeport. This
route seems to be the easiest way for an electrical dummy like me to
get my lathe going on 110. And the third reason is that even if I find
out that I would have been better off going the other route for some
reason that I'm not even aware of yet, at least I don't hear any
complaints from people that went with DC motors for this purpose, so
it can't be all that bad. In other words, my lathe should still be
workable even if this doesn't end up being the best thing. If that
makes any sense to you...

Thanks,
David
