dog tag engraving machine

My dog has new dog tags, made by a coin operated machine at the local pet
store. This is a CNC engraving machine.
The long x axis (maybe 30") was a bar of steel maybe 2" x 1/2" with knife
edges on the 1/2" sides and roller bearings.
The z axis was a rack, it appears to have just two positions, up and
down(engraving).
y axis wasn't clear.

There were stepper motors on x and y axis.

I didn't see a rotating cutter, or see anything that looked like a spindle.

There was a point that projects where the cutting was, this had the function
of pushing the metal blanks around when it wasn't cutting. I'm guessing the
cutter was inside this.

Examining the engraving under a microscope, it is clear that the cutting
tool is conical, there are marks that look just like rotary tool marks. The
precision isn't very high, it looks like the play in the machine is several
thou.

Anyone know where they hide the spindle?

Look in your local pet store for a coin operated CNC show!

Elliot
