I guess the point is missed that the method would involve NO ballscrew
machining. In many cases the headstock hole would be too small, or the lathe
would be too short to use a steady rest. In the case of rolled screws the
land portion is a rough uneven burr. It cannot be used as a datum in a
steady rest.
(some ground screws can). After affixing the cap/end to the screw it could
be further
machined since it is now a good secondary datum to the ball race, but there
is no need. Complete all machining on the cap first.
So just the cap is machined. The screw never goes on a lathe.
I think a drawing is in order!
