Now that you describe your application, all you need is a 555 with a pot to
adjust step-rate a bit, and a SPDT switch to select DIRection. Oh, and a
SPST switch to start/stop the 555 (on its pin-4). And, yes, probably a pair of
limit-switches to set limits in either direction. So, no, no PLC nor PC is
really need for a "left-right" control, with adjustable speed.
