Hi all.... kind of getting in the middle of this so please cope if I am out of line.....
So your saying that variac should only be use to adjust the ac line voltage? That it shouldn't be used instead of a transformer? As far as saftey, what about using a line fuse and the knowlege of good wiring practices?
The only reason I bring this up, is because I had my table top cnc for over 9 years, and it was commerial built, and uses a variac.....

HI Andy,
No, I didn't mean to imply anything about anybody. And I'm perfectly fine
with questions and answers! I'd have given a more elaborate answer, but was
short on time. I was a bit hasty in my original "NO". I don't wish to
offend anyone! Neither do I want to see someone hurt.
We did get some good explanations, better then I could have come up with!
Hopefully this thread will come up the next time someone searches for
"VARIAC".
