If you are looking for joystick control you might look at using a robot
controller and dc motors. Here is a $60 controller good for 2
channnels of 2 amp current. http://www.barello.net/ANT/index.htm
Major engnineering effort in these things for smooth control of tiny
battlebots.
Other manufactures make them in truly monster sizes - 200 amps? More?
