The microscopes I had used micrometer heads.
Imported micrometers and micrometer heads are very
inexpensive, almost free.
Spring load a table to them and drive with a spline or timing belt
pulley with width enough to accomodate the stage motion and you could
have a few micron resolution and repeatability over 25 mm.

Hello Guys
I would like to build a automated X-Y stage for my microscope, the
commercial ones are way off my budget. I hope to work with some
mechanical guys on this as I have no experience in this area.
I would like the stage to move in maximum of 30mm in X/Y direction,
with a precision of 10uM per step. For such a configuration, what sort
of stepper motor is used? Without having to build much of it, would it
be possible to buy major stuff like the X/Y rods off the shelf? Any
pointers is appriciated
Thank you for your time.
