  I reglued my insulator tip yesterday and have insulated the sides of 
the tube with anti-tracking paint used to insulate parts in motors, it
is just ennamel paint really but goes on well. I should get the
chance to try again at lunch time. I will try and add a dial gauge or
something so I can watch the process more closely.
The guys in the workshop are going to try driling the holes from both
sides, I don't fancy their chances but at least there may now be a
back up plan.
