Just to interject here KDE is extremely resource hungery! Personally
I don't use it anywhere though that is certainly a personal
preference. On PC's used for control work I'd have to suggest not
using KDE even if you prefer it.

If like most of us you are using older PC hardware for your control
functions or are buying lower cost units, avoiding the overhead of a
busy environment makes good sense.
