I really haven't been keeping up with this thread, but...

Most have a self-test mode - at least you can see if
everything is operational on the plotter side.

Try holding down a button, then turning on the power switch.

Yes, it says PCL, but they include HPGL too.

HP *used* to include a post card in their printers so that anyone could have
a printed set of the programming manuals. They are great technical reference.

From PURE DOS, you can copy a PLT file directly to the port and have it print
the file without any drivers, example:

copy report1.plt com2:

At least this would be a good method to test everything out.
